If you are planning to move to the UAE with your family, one of the biggest decisions you may face is whether to live in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Both cities offer excellent schools, beautiful beaches, safe communities, modern healthcare and plenty of family activities. However, the experience of living in each city can feel very different.

After living in Dubai for more than 12 years, I recently moved to Abu Dhabi with my husband and daughters. However, I still work in Dubai and commute between the two cities every working day.

This may sound like a huge journey to someone new to the UAE, but commuting between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is very doable. Many people live in one emirate and work in the other. Whether the commute works for you will depend heavily on where you live, where you work and the times you need to travel.

Dubai was my home for a very long time, and it will always be an important part of my story. Abu Dhabi is now where we have chosen to build our family life, while Dubai remains a major part of my professional life.

So, which city is better for your family?

The honest answer is that it depends on the lifestyle you want, your budget, your children’s schools and how your family feels about commuting.

Abu Dhabi

To live in Abu Dhabi while continuing a Dubai career

Both, with a daily commute

This is only a general guide. Your experience will depend heavily on the neighbourhood you choose. Some parts of Dubai feel quiet and suburban, while some areas of Abu Dhabi are busy, lively and full of activity.

The Overall Lifestyle

Living in Dubai

Dubai is exciting, ambitious and always moving.

There is constantly a new restaurant opening, an event happening or an attraction to visit. The city is filled with people from around the world, and it can feel as though everything you could possibly need is available.

For families who enjoy being busy, exploring new places and having endless entertainment options, Dubai can be incredible.

However, the pace can also feel intense. Traffic, commuting, busy calendars and the pressure to keep up with everything happening around you can become tiring.

Dubai is a city where it is very easy to be constantly doing something.

Living in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi feels calmer, more spacious and slightly more relaxed.

It is still a modern international city with restaurants, shopping centres, schools, attractions and beautiful hotels, but the overall pace feels less rushed.

Since moving to Abu Dhabi, I have noticed that family life feels a little slower. There is more of a sense that you can step back, breathe and enjoy your surroundings without feeling that you are missing out on ten other things.

That does not mean Abu Dhabi is boring. Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Hudayriyat Island, the Corniche and the city’s cultural attractions provide plenty to do. The difference is that the city generally feels less hectic.

For our family, Abu Dhabi gives us a calmer home life while my daily commute allows me to remain connected to my work in Dubai.

Housing and Family Communities

Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer apartments, villas, gated communities and waterfront living.

Housing in Dubai

Dubai has an enormous variety of communities. Families can choose between city apartments, beachfront locations, established villa communities and newer suburban developments.

Popular family areas include Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills, Jumeirah, Mirdif, The Springs, The Meadows, Town Square and many more.

The advantage of Dubai is choice. The disadvantage is that choosing the wrong location can lead to a very long daily commute.

A beautiful villa on one side of the city may not feel so perfect when school and work are on the other side.

Housing in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi also offers a wide choice of family communities, although the city feels more compact in some areas.

Families may consider locations such as Khalifa City, Al Raha, Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Reem Island, Al Reef, Al Mushrif and the Corniche area.

Depending on the location and budget, you may find that Abu Dhabi offers more space or a quieter environment. However, premium island communities and waterfront properties can still be very expensive.

If you plan to work in Dubai, the location of your Abu Dhabi home becomes especially important. Living closer to the main route between the two cities can make the daily journey much easier.

My Advice

Do not choose your home until you understand where everyone needs to be each day.

Check:

  • The morning drive to work
  • The school run
  • Afternoon traffic
  • Distance to supermarkets and medical facilities
  • Access to children’s activities
  • Parking
  • Nearby construction
  • Community facilities
  • Additional housing costs
  • Access to the main highway if you will commute between emirates

In both cities, location can affect your happiness more than the size or appearance of your home.

Schools and Education

Dubai and Abu Dhabi both have excellent international schools offering a variety of curriculums.

These can include:

  • British
  • American
  • International Baccalaureate
  • Australian
  • Indian
  • French
  • German
  • Canadian and other international programmes

Dubai has a particularly large selection of private schools, but popular schools may have waiting lists. Abu Dhabi also offers many established international schools and continues to expand its education options.

Families researching Dubai schools can use the KHDA school directory to compare schools, locations and available information. For Abu Dhabi, parents can explore private schools and fees through ADEK.

Do not select a school based only on its reputation. The best school is the one that suits your individual child and your family’s daily life.

Consider:

  • Curriculum
  • School inspection rating
  • Fees and additional charges
  • Distance from home
  • School transport
  • Class sizes
  • Learning support
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Communication with parents
  • The overall atmosphere during your visit

A highly rated school with a difficult two-hour daily school run may not be the best option for your family.

If one parent will be commuting between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, also think carefully about who will manage school drop-offs, collections, appointments and emergencies during the working day.

Getting Around

Transport in Dubai

Dubai has the more extensive public transport system of the two cities.

The Metro, Tram, buses, taxis and marine transport make it possible to live in certain areas without immediately buying a car. Communities located close to Metro stations can be particularly convenient for commuters.

Dubai’s official visitor guide provides an overview of the city’s public transport options.

However, public transport does not reach every residential community, and many families still choose to drive.

Traffic can be heavy, particularly during school and office hours. The location of your home, workplace and children’s school will make an enormous difference.

Transport in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has public buses and taxis, but many families find having a car more convenient.

The city is generally straightforward to navigate, with wide roads and many areas connected by bridges. Traffic still exists, especially around schools and during peak hours, but daily driving can feel less intense than in some parts of Dubai.

If you live, work and attend school within the same part of Abu Dhabi, your daily routine can be relatively manageable.

Commuting Between Abu Dhabi and Dubai

Living in Abu Dhabi does not automatically mean that you have to work in Abu Dhabi.

I live in Abu Dhabi with my family and commute to Dubai every working day. It is a significant journey, but it is completely manageable for me. It allows us to enjoy the family lifestyle we want in Abu Dhabi without giving up my career in Dubai.

Many UAE residents travel between the two emirates for work. Some live in Abu Dhabi and work in Dubai, while others make the journey in the opposite direction.

The commute becomes much easier when you choose your locations carefully. Living closer to the Dubai side of Abu Dhabi and working in an area with easy access to the main highway can make a huge difference.

Before deciding whether the commute is suitable for you, consider:

  • The exact location of your home
  • The exact location of your workplace
  • Your working hours
  • School drop-off and collection responsibilities
  • Traffic at the times you will travel
  • Fuel and road toll costs
  • Car mileage and maintenance
  • Whether your employer offers flexible or remote-working days
  • How much time you are comfortable spending in the car

Do not judge the journey only by the distance shown on a map. Test the actual route at the time you would normally travel.

For some people, the commute will feel too long. For others, including me, it is a worthwhile trade-off for being able to live in the city that best suits the family while continuing to work in Dubai.

Cost of Living

Neither Dubai nor Abu Dhabi should be considered a cheap city.

The cost of living in either location will depend on your housing, school choices, transport and lifestyle.

Your main expenses may include:

  • Rent
  • School fees
  • Nursery or childcare
  • Utilities
  • Air conditioning
  • Groceries
  • Medical insurance
  • Car payments and insurance
  • Fuel, parking and road tolls
  • Mobile phones and internet
  • Activities and entertainment
  • Dining out

Dubai can become particularly expensive if you choose a premium neighbourhood, attend high-fee schools and regularly participate in the city’s dining and entertainment scene.

Abu Dhabi may offer better value in certain areas, but premium communities such as Saadiyat and Yas Island can also carry high prices.

Rather than asking which city is cheaper, compare the actual lifestyle your family would have in each one.

Calculate the cost of:

  • A suitable family home
  • School fees
  • Daily transport
  • Medical insurance
  • The activities your family enjoys
  • Annual expenses paid upfront
  • Fuel, tolls and vehicle maintenance if you will commute

If you are considering living in Abu Dhabi and working in Dubai, compare the additional transport costs with what you may gain through your preferred home, community and family lifestyle.

The city with the lowest rent is not necessarily the city that will cost your family less overall.

Family Activities

You will not run out of things to do with children in either city.

Family Activities in Dubai

Dubai offers a huge variety of family entertainment, including:

  • Theme parks
  • Water parks
  • Indoor play centres
  • Beaches
  • Desert experiences
  • Museums
  • Aquariums
  • Sporting activities
  • Creative workshops
  • Seasonal events
  • Large shopping and entertainment destinations

Dubai is especially good for families who love trying new attractions and having a busy social calendar.

The amount of choice is fantastic, but family outings can quickly become expensive. It helps to mix the big-ticket attractions with beaches, parks and free community activities.

Family Activities in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi offers a strong combination of entertainment, culture, beaches and outdoor experiences.

Family favourites include:

  • Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi
  • Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
  • Yas Waterworld
  • SeaWorld Yas Island
  • The National Aquarium
  • Louvre Abu Dhabi
  • Saadiyat’s museums and cultural attractions
  • Corniche Beach
  • Hudayriyat Island
  • Mangrove kayaking
  • Parks and cycling tracks
  • Al Ain day trips

The official Experience Abu Dhabi family guide is a useful starting point for discovering activities across the emirate.

Abu Dhabi’s islands make it easy to combine a family activity with time outdoors, a beach visit or a relaxed meal.

Beaches and Outdoor Life

Both cities have beautiful beaches, but the experience can feel different.

Dubai offers famous beach destinations, beachfront restaurants, beach clubs and active waterfront communities. Places such as JBR, Kite Beach and Dubai Islands provide plenty of ways to enjoy the coast.

Abu Dhabi’s island layout makes the water feel like a natural part of the city. The Corniche, Saadiyat, Yas Island, Hudayriyat and Al Bateen offer beaches and waterfront spaces for different types of family days.

The Abu Dhabi Corniche includes eight kilometres of waterfront with walking and cycling paths, play areas, cafés and beach access, according to the official Abu Dhabi tourism guide.

During the cooler months, both cities are wonderful for parks, beaches, picnics, cycling and outdoor dining.

During summer, family life moves indoors in both locations.

Restaurants and Social Life

Dubai

Dubai has an enormous and constantly changing restaurant scene. You can find everything from inexpensive local favourites to celebrity restaurants and luxury dining experiences.

There is always somewhere new to try, and the city has a very active nightlife and social scene.

If dining out, events and nightlife are a big part of your lifestyle, Dubai offers more variety.

Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi also has excellent restaurants, cafés, brunches and hotel dining, but the scene feels smaller and more relaxed.

You may not have the same overwhelming number of new openings, but there are still many fantastic places to discover, especially around Yas Island, Saadiyat, Al Maryah Island, Reem Island and the Corniche.

For us, Abu Dhabi has plenty to enjoy while making it slightly easier to slow down and spend intentional time together.

Living in Abu Dhabi also does not mean giving up everything Dubai offers. We can still enjoy Dubai’s restaurants, events and attractions while returning to the calmer family life we have chosen in Abu Dhabi.

Travel and Airports

Both cities are well positioned for international travel.

Dubai International Airport offers a huge number of global connections. Depending on where you live in Dubai, reaching the airport during heavy traffic can take time.

Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport is modern and well connected, and Etihad Airways provides access to destinations around the world.

Your preferred airline, work travel and the destinations you visit most often may influence which city is more convenient.

The two cities are also close enough for residents to use either airport when the flight options or prices make it worthwhile.

Work and Career Opportunities

Your workplace should play a major role in your decision, but it does not necessarily have to determine where you live.

Dubai has a large and diverse private-sector economy, with opportunities across hospitality, tourism, retail, technology, media, finance, property and many other industries.

Abu Dhabi is the UAE’s capital and has strong opportunities in government, energy, finance, healthcare, education, culture, technology and related sectors.

Living in one city and working in the other is absolutely possible. I do it every working day, and many other UAE residents make the same choice.

The key is to be realistic about the route rather than immediately dismissing the idea. The commute can work particularly well when your home and workplace are both positioned close to the main road between the two cities.

Before committing, drive the full journey during your expected working hours. Also calculate the cost of fuel, tolls, car maintenance and the additional mileage you will add each year.

Most importantly, consider what you gain in return. For our family, living in Abu Dhabi gives us the lifestyle and home environment we want, while commuting allows me to continue working in Dubai. That balance makes the journey worthwhile.

Which City Is Better for Different Families?

Dubai May Suit Your Family If:

  • You enjoy a fast-paced lifestyle.
  • You want the widest possible variety of restaurants and entertainment.
  • You prefer access to the Metro and a larger public transport network.
  • You want to live close to your Dubai workplace.
  • You enjoy constant events, new openings and social opportunities.
  • You want a huge choice of residential communities and schools.
  • You do not mind a busier environment.

Abu Dhabi May Suit Your Family If:

  • You prefer a calmer pace of life.
  • You want a city that feels spacious and family focused.
  • You enjoy beaches, islands and outdoor activities.
  • You prefer less pressure to be constantly busy.
  • You want access to culture, nature and family attractions.
  • You are comfortable relying more heavily on a car.
  • You work in Dubai but are willing to commute for the Abu Dhabi lifestyle.

My Honest Experience

Dubai was my home for more than 12 years. It is where I built my career, raised my daughters and experienced some of the most significant chapters of my life.

I love Dubai’s energy, opportunities and the fact that there is always something happening. It gave me a life I could never have imagined when I first moved to the UAE, and it remains an important part of my life because I still work there.

Moving to Abu Dhabi did not mean walking away from Dubai. Instead, we chose to separate where we wanted to build our family life from where I happened to work.

I now live in Abu Dhabi and commute to Dubai every working day. The journey takes planning, and it adds time and mileage to my day, but it is very doable. I am also far from the only person making this commute.

For me, the drive is a worthwhile exchange for the lifestyle we have in Abu Dhabi. Our home life feels calmer, the pace is more manageable, and the city suits this stage of our family’s life.

At the same time, I can continue my career in Dubai and remain connected to the city that was my home for so many years.

That does not make Abu Dhabi better than Dubai. It makes Abu Dhabi better suited to what our family needs right now and commuting allows me to enjoy the benefits of both cities.

Your answer may be completely different.

Final Verdict

There is no single winner in the Dubai versus Abu Dhabi debate.

Dubai offers energy, choice, convenience and endless entertainment. Abu Dhabi offers space, calm, culture and a more relaxed family rhythm.

You also do not always have to choose between living in one city and working in the other. The daily commute between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is possible, and many people successfully make it part of their routine.

Before deciding:

  1. Confirm the exact location of your workplace.
  2. Research suitable schools.
  3. Compare realistic housing costs.
  4. Test the daily commute during your actual travel times.
  5. Calculate fuel, toll and vehicle costs.
  6. Consider how you want your family’s weekdays and weekends to feel.
  7. Think about whether the benefits of your preferred city make the commute worthwhile.
  8. Visit both cities if possible.

Do not choose a city based only on which one looks more exciting on social media. Choose the place where your family’s ordinary Mondays will work, not only where your weekends will look impressive.

For our family, Abu Dhabi gives us the lifestyle we want, while my daily commute allows me to continue working in Dubai. It may not be the right arrangement for everyone, but it proves that living in one emirate and working in the other can be a realistic and rewarding option.

Whether you choose Dubai, Abu Dhabi or a combination of living in one and working in the other, both cities can offer your family a safe, exciting and rewarding life in the UAE.

School fees, housing prices, transport services and local requirements can change. Confirm current information through the relevant authorities, including KHDA for Dubai schools and ADEK for Abu Dhabi schools.
